Impact from Storm Amy
Updates
It’s been a tremendous team effort today as we’ve worked to restore service to as many affected customers as possible. Our engineering teams have done an outstanding job — managing to replace the damaged fibre run in Cragganmore by mid-afternoon and continuing repairs well into the evening.
We’re pleased to report that connectivity has been restored for a large number of customers. However, we know that some of you are still without service, and we want to assure you that we’re doing everything possible to get everyone back online as quickly as we can.
Our teams will be back out tomorrow continuing the work, and we’ll share another update then to keep you informed of our progress.
Our engineers carried out network checks today wherever it was safe to do so. We’ve confirmed that a section of our overhead cable in the Cragganmore area has suffered significant damage, resulting in a loss of service for several customers.
Unfortunately, current wind speeds remain too high to safely begin repair work, and forecasts suggest this will continue into tomorrow (Sunday). The damaged section is also in a particularly challenging location — on a slope and among trees — which adds to the complexity of the repair.
We are planning a full engineering effort on Monday to replace the affected cable span and restore service. The planned work will include:
- Safely removing the fallen tree limb that damaged our cable and assessing nearby trees for any further risk (some of this work may require tree surgeons)
- Removing the damaged cable from the poles
- Installing a new 130-metre span of overhead cable and securing it across multiple poles
- Splicing and reconnecting 20 fibre strands at each end to restore connectivity
We aim to complete the work on Monday; however, due to the complexity of the site and potential unforeseen challenges, completion may extend into Tuesday.
We’ll continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as work progresses.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to safely restore service.
Storm Amy has brought severe weather across Scotland, and as of 9am, SSE Powertrack is reporting over 240 power outages across its coverage area.
A large number of our customers are currently offline, and most of these issues are power-related. However, we also suspect that some of our overhead fibre cables may have sustained damage. Our engineers are inspecting the network today to confirm this. If repairs are required, we’ll need to wait until wind speeds drop to safe levels before work can begin.
In the meantime, please note:
-
Do not reset your router. Once power is restored and any faults are cleared, your connection will automatically come back online.

Contacting us: If you need to reach our team, please use our landline (01343 666002) or email (support@wifiscotland.co.uk).
Please avoid calling engineers directly on their mobile numbers — they’ll be out in the field working on faults and unable to answer calls.
Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to restore services as safely and quickly as possible.
Kind regards,
The WiFi Scotland Team
